Concord’s BOG Votes to Keep Student Costs at Current Rate

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University will not increase tuition and fees, or room and board for the 2020-2021 school year. The Board of Governors voted in favor of the proposal at its scheduled meeting Tuesday afternoon.
In previous years, a decrease in state funding and declining enrollment required an adjustment to compensate for budget shortfalls. However, under the current economic climate, the administration recognizes that many students are facing financial hardship and so they are working to make sure their education remains accessible by keeping costs consistent.

“Concord University students and their families continue to be challenged by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related economic impact. Even though Concord is faced with rising costs, we recommended doing our part to relieve some of the stress on our students by not increasing tuition and fees, or room and board,”

Dr. Charles Becker, Vice President for Finance and Business

During the same meeting, the Board also elected new officers. Chairman Dave Barnette, who will remain in his position, presented recommendations from the Executive Committee and the Board voted to affirm. Richard Jarrell, owner of Chick-fil-a franchises in the Beckley area, was reappointed to the position of Secretary. Dr. Brad Lane—owner of Appalachian Eye Care in Princeton, W.Va.—will now serve as the Vice Chair, replacing Bill McKee who has decided to step down from the board.
McKee has served on Concord’s Board since his appointment on August 14th, 2013. He is a retired wealth manager with Arnette Carbis Toothman, LLP in Charleston, W.Va. and currently resides in Florida.

“Bill McKee has been an asset to Concord University during his time serving on our Board of Governors. I am grateful for all he has contributed, and we will miss his guidance,”

Dr. Kendra Boggess, President of Concord University

In addition to McKee, the Board also said farewell to the student representative and CU’s Provost. Taylor Carter, SGA President, will be handing her seat to SGA member Zoey Colley. Dr. Peter Viscusi, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, will be replaced by Dr. Edward Huffstetler beginning July 1st.
