ATHENS, W.Va. – A popular summertime event that has a long-running history in the area is announcing its cancellation for 2020. The Athens-Concord Town Social, which typically draws hundreds of attendees to Concord University’s front lawn one Sunday afternoon each August, won’t be holding a large, in-person gathering this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As a longtime Athenian and Mountain Lion, it is tough cancelling this year’s social since so many of us look forward to this fun annual event – catching up with friends and neighbors, near and far. However, in light of the recent global pandemic, we thought it in the best interest of all.”
Dr. Sarah Beasley, Athens-Concord Town Social Chairperson
For more than three decades, the Town Social has offered family-friendly entertainment and fun for the CU and Athens communities along with guests from across the area. While the event won’t be held in 2020, organizers are already looking forward to hosting the gathering next year.
“We look forward to seeing everyone in 2021 for the best Town Social yet!”
