Congresswoman Miller Meets With CU Officials To Talk Funding

ATHENS, W.Va. – University administration, faculty, and staff welcomed U.S. Congresswoman Carol Miller to “The Campus Beautiful” this afternoon. The Congresswoman scheduled the visit among others in the district today. The goal was to learn how federal dollars are working at Concord, and how she could provide assistance to the university in Washington, D.C.

Concord University is home to several federally-funded TRiO programs, including Student Support Services, Upward Bound, Veteran’s Upward Bound, GEAR UP, and the McNair Scholars Program. Representatives from each group spoke to Congresswoman Miller about how the programs serve students and how the federal government plays an important role in their ability to do so.

“We are able to serve our students because we have these funds. There is always a need for more, but we serve our students well.”

Dr. Kendra Boggess, President of Concord University

One program represented that lacked federal funding was the university’s veterans program. The shortage of available federal funds to helping veterans stay in school and complete a degree was a subject of high interest for the Congresswoman whose husband served in the military.

“We’ll look into that,” Congresswoman Miller said. “That would be some good legislation.”

The group spent an hour together discussing current projects and needs in the region.
