Athens, W.Va. – The Office of Multicultural Affairs at Concord College announces that the deadline for the Martin Luther King Scholar Awards Essay Contest has been extended to January 14, 2003.
“Many teachers have classes working on the essays and because of the school closures due to inclement weather, the students have not had enough time to complete their essays. We want everyone who is working on an essay to have adequate time to collaborate with their teacher,”

This contest will offer area high school, middle school and elementary school students along with Concord College students the opportunity to participate in an essay competition focusing on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: The Man, The Movement, The Legacy.
The essays will be judged by a panel composed of Concord College students, faculty and staff. Award winners will be required to attend the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 20, 2003 and present their essay.
An award in the form of a scholarship ($1,000 for first place and $500 for second place) will be given to the Concord College student who writes a winning essay of 1500 words focusing on Martin Luther King Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement.
A $250 savings bond and a $50 gift certificate to Wal-mart will be given to the high school student who writes a winning essay of 1500 words focusing on Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy. The second place winner will be given a $100 savings bond and a $50 gift certificate to Wal-mart.
A $50 savings bond and a $25 gift certificate to Wal-mart will be given to the middle school student who writes a winning essay of 500 words focusing on Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous words written in a letter from the Birmingham jail in 1963: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” A $50 savings bond and a $10 gift certificate to Wal-mart will be given to the second place winner.
A $50 savings bond and a $25 gift certificate to Wal-mart will be given to the elementary school student who writes a winning essay of 200-300 words focusing on Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous words spoken at the Civil Rights March on Washington, August 28, 1963: “I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” The second place winner will receive a $50 savings bond and a $10 gift certificate to Wal-mart.
“Few have had as much impact upon the American consciousness as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. We hope that this essay contest will motivate students to study his life and his work.”

A cover sheet that includes the student’s name, mailing address, school attending, and telephone number must be attached to the essay.
