
ATHENS, W.Va. – On Friday, October 13th, 2000, Concord College President Jerry Beasley presented Dr. Vivian Crane with a Merit Award for service as a member of the Concord College Board of Advisors (1999-2000) and for her continuing interest in the goals of the college and of higher education in West Virginia. The award was presented at the College’s fall alumni banquet.
Crane is a native of West Virginia and a graduate of Rupert High School in Greenbrier County. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Concord College with teaching fields in mathematics and physical education. Dr. Crane received a masters in mathematics education and a doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Virginia. Dr. Crane was named a National Science Foundation Fellow and a General Electric Fellow. She has had additional studies at both Purdue University and West Virginia University.
Crane has served as a teacher in public schools in both Virginia and West Virginia. In addition, she served as: a public school principal, coordinator of the Greenbrier Valley Extension Center of WVU, dean of the Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College, part-time instructor for WVU’s graduate education program, and as an educator and consultant in the nursing department of the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.
Crane told the audience that many high school students in Greenbrier County have a dream of walking through the pines of Concord College, and how important it is for friends and family to support students’ dreams.
Football Players Honored
Football players who graduated in 1950 and 1975 were honored at Concord College’s homecoming game, during pre-game activities. Former coach Tony Colobro, who coached Concord’s football team from 1974 through 1983 organized the event. Those who returned to be honored included: Wayne Jessie, Fred Tibbs, Frank Dent, Ron Cowan, Terry Wright, Ken Ragle, Sonny Phillips, Dan Smelser, Hal Thomas, Gary Foster, Jay Sealey, Tony Carden, Ralph Modeno, Jeff Broyles, Coach Tony Colobro, and Coach John Pinter.
Homecoming King, Queen Announced
Susan Thorn (Delta Zeta) from Welch, W.Va., and Wes Lilly (Mu Xi Phi) from Covington, Va., were crowned Homecoming Queen and King during halftime ceremonies at Callaghan Stadium where Concord defeated Glenville State 34-10. Others in the homecoming court included: first runners up Shelley George (Sigma, Sigma, Sigma) from Fayetteville, W.Va. and Jonathan Stanley (Pi Kappa Phi) from Summersville, W.Va., second runners up Judith Mwamuka (Black Student Union) from Africa and Abhishek Singh (International Club) from India. Other members of the homecoming court were Jaime Metz (Alpha Sigma Alpha) from Parsons, W.Va., Eric Lester (Tau Kappa Epsilon) from Clear Fork, W.Va., Tiffany Whitteker (Alpha Sigma Tau) from Roanoke, Va., and Jonathan Kirk (Phi Sigma Phi) from Walton, W.Va.
