Amnesty International to Speak at Concord College

ATHENS, W.Va. – Representatives from Amnesty International will be speaking at Concord College Thursday, October 12th, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in Conference Room E on the ground floor of the College Center.

Amnesty International (AI) received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for promoting international peace. The speakers will be Jonathan Hutto, membership program coordinator for their Mid-Atlantic region and Mona Cadena, field organizer. They are from Washington, D.C. AI is located on the campus of 1,600 high schools, colleges and universities nationwide. AI is a self-supporting organization and does not receive funding from any state or government entity.

AI has a chapter on the campus of Concord College that was organized this year by Abhishek Singh, from New Delhi, India, an accounting and pre-law major. The chapter is the first organized in southern West Virginia.

“Helping someone irrespective of race, religion or national origin is a noble gesture. We want to increase awareness of world issues and human rights activities in support of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. AI helps people understand the plight of our global neighbors, and many want to help improve conditions once they understand.”
