
ATHENS, W.Va. – Student Organization for the Understanding of Politics (SOUP) will sponsor a gubernatorial debate Monday, October 16th, 7:30 p.m., in the Main Auditorium of the Alexander Fine Arts Center. Libertarian candidate Bob Myers, Mountain Party candidate Denise Giardina and National Law candidate Randall Ashelman will participate in the debate. Republican Governor Cecil Underwood and Democratic Representative Bob Wise have been invited. Students will serve as moderators for the event.

SOUP has about 25 student members at Concord College, including political science majors and other students interested in politics. Debate committee members include: SOUP President Susana Duarte (class of 2002), from Dale City, Virginia; Debate Chair Jonathan Ellis (class of 2002), from Delbarton; and Scott Maxwell, (class of 2001) from Spanishburg. Faculty sponsors for the organization are: Dr. James A. White, assistant professor of political science and Dr. Carson L. Holloway, assistant professor of political science.
