“Crimes of the Heart” Comedy Scheduled for Homecoming Weekend at Concord College

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord College Theatre is presenting Crimes of the Heart, a comedy by Beth Henley. The play is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This warm-hearted play teems with humanity and humor as it follows the plight of three sisters from Mississippi, betrayed by their own passions. The New York Post stated, “It would be a crime for anyone interested in theatre not to see this play.”

The play takes place in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered together because the youngest sister, Babe, has shot her husband. The sisters are played by three talented Concord students. Lenny, the oldest sister, will be played by Christal Toppins. Christal has been in six shows at Concord and has directed five. She is last year’s recipient of the H.C. Paul Theatre Excellence Award. Meg, an aspiring country musician, will be played by Jennifer Scott. Jennifer has many plays under her belt at Concord and at other local theatres. Cindy Boyce will play the youngest sister, Babe. Cindy has been active in Concord’s theatre since her freshman year. She will be directing the December show, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Aaron Brakefield plays Doc, Meg’s former boyfriend. Aaron stared in last spring’s production of Godspell. Matthew Campbell plays Barnette Lloyd, Babe’s attorney. Matthew has worked with the Theatre of West Virginia in such works as Honey in the Rock, Hatfields and McCoys, and The Wizard of Oz. Chick, a cousin to the Magrath sisters, is played by Sarah Lewis. Sarah is a Communication Arts major and was also in Concord’s production of Picnic and a number of other Concord productions.

Robbie Moore will be stage manager for Crimes of the Heart. Robbie has been an asset to Concord’s theatre by working in shows such as The Wizard of Oz, Grease, and Godspell. Beth Sampson is the assistant stage manager for this production. Beth was also in last spring’s production of Godspell.

Crimes of the Heart will run October 12th at 8:00 p.m., October 13th at 8:30 p.m., and October 14th at 8:00 p.m. Cost for admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for senior citizens, and $2.00 for non-Concord students. Concord faculty, staff, and students are admitted free. This play is not recommended for students under the age of 15 due to adult situations and language.
