ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord College Division of Business and Economics will host the Eighth Annual Business Challenge on Tuesday, October 17th, 2000 on the Athens campus. The Business Challenge is designed to give students an opportunity to test their business knowledge base and teachers an opportunity to learn about new teaching tools and techniques.
Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration in the lobby of the Alexander Fine Arts Center followed by a welcome from Concord President Jerry L. Beasley and Division of Business and Economics Chair, Dr. Kendra Boggess. The first testing sessions will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. with an awards ceremony following at 1:10 p.m. in the Fine Arts Main Theatre. Campus tours will be conducted by the Concord Ambassadors after the testing session.
This year, a junior and senior attending the Concord College Business Challenge may compete for one of two scholarships. The two winners will be selected based on their Business Challenge Scholarship examination performance. The two students scoring the highest on the exam will qualify for a $500.00 per year scholarship when they enroll full-time at Concord College. Each winner must meet admissions criteria established by the College for entering freshman. After the students’ first year of College, the scholarship will be renewed if the student maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) and remains in good standing with the College. The scholarship will be renewable for up to eight semesters. The maximum total award could be $2,000.00 for each winner.
The admissions office will be the primary administrator of the award and the office will work in cooperation with the business faculty in selecting the winners.
Teachers and counselors will get to hear guest speaker Timothy D. Barnes, Director of Academic Computing and Associate Professor of Instructional Systems Development for Concord as he presents Integrating Technology in Instructional Strategy. The Teachers and Counselors Seminar will begin at 10:50 a.m.
Approximately 225 junior and senior high school students from West Virginia and Virginia are expected to attend this event.

Concord College Notes:Â Concord business graduates have a history of high performance on post-exit examinations, such as the CPA licensure examination, and they report themselves to be satisfied in their careers. The business division is fortunate to have highly credentialed full-time faculty, with 82% holding doctorates or CPA credentials. Adjunct instructors also hold impressive credentials. Among them are two Ph.Ds, six Juris Doctorates, four MBAs, six CPAs, and an assortment of other professional degrees. These individuals are actively involved in the business community and generally hold high-ranking positions, which give them an experience base helpful to students.
