Concord’s Beckley Campus Receives Library Resources Via Technology

ATHENS, W.Va. – The J. Frank Marsh Library at Concord College is now making library resources available to its Beckley campus via a new technology called ARIEL, stated Library Director Stephen Rowe.

“ARIEL is a reliable and dependable web based utility, which allows users to transmit documents in digital format either the same day or the next day. Concord students are able to use the new service for free.”

In order to make this service available to Concord students in Beckley, Information Systems Specialist Douglas Moore installed the ARIEL software on the computers at the college’s Beckley campus. Concord’s staff Librarian Robert Turnbull will be responsible for assisting students with the ARIEL search and sending the requested documents to them via the web.

“This is another great system for students to conduct more extensive and in-depth research, and get the information more quickly than traditional ways. I am thankful to my library staff for their assistance in setting this system up.”

Rowe is going to the Beckley campus to meet with instructors and students to conduct an orientation about how to use the new ARIEL service in September.

Dr. William O’Brien, director of Concord’s Beckley Center, sees the ARIEL technology as very beneficial to the quality of Concord’s program.

“Dr. Rowe’s orientation will be very helpful. It will motivate instructors to make the kinds of research assignments that students need. ARIEL makes it possible for students to conduct research that they’ve not been able to complete until now. This is the very best use of technology to enhance instructional quality.”

Concord College Notes: The Communication Arts Department produces the College’s student newspaper, radio programming and television programming. The department also produces theatrical and musical productions. It is organized similar to today’s modern corporation with the students completing projects under both student and faculty supervision. This gives students real-world experience that focuses on accountability and responsibility.

Naomi Koyano, a student in Concord College’s Communication Arts Department wrote this press release. She is working as a student intern in the office of development at Concord College this summer. Her hometown is Tokyo, Japan. She is majoring in Communication Broadcasting. Her anticipated graduation date is August, 2000.
